Muharraq’s Municipal Council will revisit the fate of the temporary central market site set up in Hassan bin Thabit Park, Block 207, during its meeting tomorrow, with a committee urging that the park remain untouched.
Councillor for the Seventh Constituency, Ahmed Al Moqahwi, submitted the matter in a written memorandum dated April 27. It was later reviewed in a meeting between the council’s committee and the executive staff responsible for the site.
The discussion focused on what to do with the space, which currently serves as both a makeshift market site and the only green retreat for residents in the surrounding area.
The Committee’s Recommendation:
Leave the park as it is.
The committee described the site as an essential breathing space in a neighbourhood lacking greenery. It emphasized that families and children rely on the park for outdoor play and gatherings, and that removing it would cause immediate harm to the local community.
The park, the report added, helps clear the air, cool the streets, and serves as a quiet patch of nature in an otherwise built-up quarter. It carries emotional weight and daily value for residents who consider it part of their routine.
The committee further stressed that any decision regarding the site must go through the council and cannot be taken without prior agreement. Many residents have written and spoken repeatedly in support of keeping the park.
Looking Ahead:
While calling for the park’s preservation, the committee did not completely shut the door on other uses for the temporary market site. It proposed that the executive explore investment options that suit the area’s character and needs.
Such a plan, the report added, could allow the land to serve more than one purpose—reviving local shops, attracting private investment, and creating job opportunities for residents.
